Per the American Heart Association there are approximately 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually. Early CPR and defibrillation (use of an AED) have been shown to double or even triple the chance of survival. Community responders and bystanders are critical to the Chain of Survival and research shows that only 35-45% of people in cardiac arrest receive CPR prior to EMS arrival. While first responders make every effort to arrive quickly, neighbors in the community are much closer. Every second counts when a person is in cardiac arrest, and PulsePoint provides a rapid way to alert those in the area that CPR is needed.

PulsePoint

PulsePoint is a lifesaving mobile app designed to empower citizens trained in CPR to help individuals nearby who are experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.  The app is specifically beneficial in communities where local fire and EMS agencies have integrated it with their emergency dispatch systems, making real-time incident alerts possible. Lancaster County has implemented this program into our 911 system and you can join us!

There are two primary apps available:

  1. PulsePoint Respond: This app alerts users who are trained in CPR if someone nearby is experiencing a cardiac arrest. The app displays the location of the incident and any nearby Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), allowing bystanders to intervene quickly if they choose.
  2. PulsePoint AED: This app enables users to locate and register AEDs within the community, building a valuable public AED registry accessible during emergencies.

To use PulsePoint, simply download it from the app store and register as a user. By enabling notifications for CPR emergencies, you can be alerted when someone nearby needs assistance. Users can view the location of emergencies and AEDs on a map, though the level of detail is dependent on whether the user is a verified professional responder or a public CPR responder. Public CPR responders will only be alerted for cardiac arrests in public areas and not in private residences. The app also has CPR and AED instructions available.

PulsePoint has been adopted by over 5,100 communities, with fire departments and EMS agencies partnering to increase cardiac arrest survival rates by ensuring faster response times from trained bystanders. Lancaster County has adopted the PulsePoint app and encourages the community to download and register to further support the community you live in!

For more information and to download the app, you can visit the PulsePoint website or check the app in your device's app store.
